OUR NEW PROJECT

The new project area taken up by Family Health and Education (FHE) is Mayur Vihar in New Delhi. The place, Yamuna Khadar, is a small village located between Mayur Vihar and the banks of river Yamuna.

ABOUT THEM

There are around 250 families with 6-8 members in each family. The occupants of the village are migrants from Bihar, West Bengal and Orissa. They mainly work in the farmland, which is owned by landlords. They work as bond farmers and get a meager Rs 40 per day as wages. 


The families live in small shanties which lack basic amenities like potable water, electricity and sanitation. Also there is no proper drainage system, which results in mosquito breeding and many infectious diseases. They don’t get nutritious food as they eat only vegetables that are grown in their farm.

A very small chunk of kids attend the school. Others work in the field with their parents. A girl from a nearby area takes classes for them in the evenings.

HEALTH CONDITION

Most of the people are anemic and are infected with parasites. As they work in the field whole day, they have skin infections all over their body. Many of them have never been to a hospital, had vaccinations or taken any medicines in their life.

THE PROJECT

Our project primarily aims at providing them with medical care, vaccinating the children and improving their health.

Our first visit was in the month of March. We have planned to visit them every 15 days.

In our last two visits, we have vaccinated the children and given medicines. In the coming visits, we would like to give them classes on basic hygiene and provide them with nutritious food to fight anemia.

We are grateful to  ‘Feeling India’  for giving them rice, pulses and salt so that they can prepare nutritious food, and also for providing them juice and snacks to increase their glucose level in the hot sun.

We invite people to lend a helping hand in our project by sponsoring medicines, nutritious food and basic healthcare products and taking time out to visit the place, educate the children and volunteer the cause.

NEW PROJECTS

Thanks to the enthusiastic people of Association of ‘3 Grados’, we are able to start a new project in nutrition for children of Hauz Khas Village. The mothers are very happy to learn to make high nutritious food for their children.

‘Feeling India’ Lends a Helping Hand to FHE – contributes winter clothes for the children

The girls were provided with warm clothes in December with the contribution from Feeling India. All the girls were given warm jackets, trousers and socks.

The girls were very happy receiving them in the biting cold of Delhi.

CHRISTMAS PARTY AT MGF MALL

Children were invited by Mr.Puneet to celebrate Christmas at the Ice Lounge in MGF Metropolitan Mall, Saket. The party was organized by Miss Rashi Anand and her friend Rubeine on 25^th December, 2010. The children went there in the morning accompanied by Dr. J J Kunnacherry, Ms Maheshwari and Ms Anju. They were welcomed with warmth by the organizers.

The girls were excited to visit such a nice place. They were given special attires before entering the lounge. They danced and enjoyed inside. Once they came out of the freezing temperature inside, they had lunch and met Santa Claus. The girls then played ‘musical chair’ and danced with the ladies. Before leaving, the girls gave them Christmas cards they had made for them and the ladies gifted them beautiful Barbie dolls.

It was a memorable day in the life of the girls!

Salina Wilson, Volunteer, F.H.E

My journey with F.H.E began five years ago, when I was in the 11^th grade and I went for a medical camp organized by F.H.E at Chattarpur village. Ever since, there was no looking back. I have worked with F.H.E for these 5 years as a volunteer and have been an active member for the educational programme. I have attended several medical camps as well and helped wherever I could.

It was while working in the urban slums of Delhi through FHE that I decided to take up professional social work as a career and I can proudly say that I stuck to my decision which I took in the year 2005. I am presently doing my Masters in Social work from Tata Institute, Mumbai, and even while I was on a vacation, I could not resist coming back to F.H.E and volunteering for the Education project. F.H.E allows me to put my ideas into shape and implement them and I was successful in preparing a module to teach the children of Hauz Khas village. The module involved giving out handouts and worksheets to the children and asking them to work on them post the lecture that I gave them. In the 12 days that I taught them, I could see a significant improvement in them through the responses they were giving.

F.H.E holds a significant place in my life and has been very crucial in making me more responsible and able a person that I am today.

"Feeling India" (Delhi)

Feeling India is a group of ladies, both foreigners and Indians, coming together for a good cause.

They are helping F.H.E to set up a new center in Hauz Khas Village and decorate it.

In August "Indi Girls" from Castellon, Spain, visited Hauz Khas Village and provided help for the educational programme for the female children.

  

A party was organized and sponsored by Mrs. Barlani Roy to celebrate Independence Day with the slum children of Hauz Khas Village.

We celebrated Diwali with friends and volunteers of Family Health and Education.

Activities 2009

Medical Activities

Medical camps and vaccination camps were held in various areas of South Delhi serving mostly women and their children. Free medical services to those who cannot afford to pay - i.e. those living in slum areas were provided. Check-ups were done for basic things like weight, height, blood pressure etc.

Vaccination Campaigns against Typhoid, Hepatitis-B, Hepatitis-A were conducted in different areas of Delhi viz. Tuglakabad 0n 08/08/09, Chattarpur on 23/11/09.

 

Educational Activities

Classes on “About the Family” were conducted for ladies in Tughlakabad Extension Neeti Bag, Brahaldpur and Mayur vihar.

Tuition classes were given for 53 girls in Hauz Khas Village.

8 adolescent education classes were conducted for 17 girls age between 14 -17 about Hygiene, HIV, Helping others   & Respect for elders and for ladies nutrition classes were given in Hauz khas Pahadi. 

                                                              

School bags were given to the girls at the starting of the new academic session.

Activities 2006-08

Family Health and Education has provided medical care to more than 25,500 underprivileged patients until 2007. The medical camps, which aim at preventing infectious diseases, treatment of acute illnesses, and providing much needed immunization, are held eight to twelve times annually. This year were attended more than 2500 patients were seen free of cost.

Project Activities

Since it started its existence in November 1998, FHC has provided medical care to more than 23000 underprivileged patients , with the help of medical, para-medical and non-medical volunteers. Four to eight medical camps and vaccination campaigns per year are being held in urban slum areas of Delhi, focusing on prevention of infectious diseases like Typhoid, Hepatitis B and of uterus cancer, screening for hypertension and diabetes, and immunization. International representatives in Delhi  also contributed to the programs. FHE  conducts Sex Education classes for school students in different schools of South Delhi.
The project director of FHE is Dr. J J Kunnacherry , a consultant gynaecologist and obstetrician .She is an Indian citizen. She did her medical studies in Spain (University of Pamplona, Navarra), where she practiced until 1983. She lived in Nigeria from 1983 to 1997, where she co-founded in 1993 Niger Foundation Hospital in Enugu, being its Hospital Director and Chief Gynaecologist.  She came back to India in 1997 to start  Family Health Care, with the aim of reproducing the experiences in Europe and Africa. During these years Family Health Care conducted more than 40 medical camps and vaccination campaigns in different areas of Delhi. With the experience of these years she has also published three booklets in education and health care.

        

   




Every year we are planning to give vaccination for Hepatitis - B (three injections) and  Typhoid to 2000 children, along with medical check up for the children and their mothers.   Most of them have an income less than 1 Euro per day and cannot afford medical expenses.
